Based on 2019 police-reported data, 11% of seniors (65-89) who experienced violence in Canada were victimized in a nursing or retirement home.

Women experience higher rates of violence in these settings, in part because there are higher rates of women in nursing and retirement homes, especially as seniors increase in age.

66% or two-thirds of those who experienced violence in nursing and retirement homes were women.

Women in these settings were more likely to face sexual assault compared to men: 20% women and 5% men.

Men in these settings were more likely to face physical assault compared to women: 76% women and 90% men.
